Are you feeling bored in your current exercise plan? Are you doing the same thing day after day? Unless you are training for a specific event, adding variety to your workouts is the best way to keep your body from hitting a plateau. Adding in different movements, intensity levels and new exercises is just what your body and mind needs to be challenged to keep making progress. Many gyms offer some great classes that can spice up your routine and may also be covered in the cost of your gym membership. Here are a few classes that you may want to check out.
Suspension Training Class
Have you ever seen those straps that are hanging from the ceiling? That is the Suspension Training System. Suspension training uses your own body weight to develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. By using different angles during movements, suspension training can challenge all fitness levels . You chose your intensity and make the workout work for you.
Interval Class
Want a fast workout that continues to burn calories LONG after you finish the class? Give an interval class a try. Interval classes alternate between bouts of high intensity exercises with periods of low intensity exercises or complete rest. These classes will challenge you to push your limits so the classes are shorter in duration, but HIGH in intensity.
Cycling Class
Cycling is a great way to get away from the high impact exercises but still get a great workout. This type of class is a welcome change if you are used to workouts that are centered around running or jumping. During this class your “ride” will simulate pedaling along the flats and up and down hills by varying the wheel resistance and the position of your body.
Hi. My name is Tera and I have a hair problem. Correction, I HAD a hair problem. When I workout, and I must say that I WORKout, my hair gets drenched in sweat. The more I move, the more I sweat. And the more I sweat, the more I get slapped in the face with icky, salty, grossy-gross hair. And there is nothing more that I hate than getting a face full of sweat soaked hair – well other than trying to pull your wet, sweat saturated sports bra over your head only for it to become a boa constrictor dead set on strangling you to death. Ugh! But I digress – we are talking about hair problems, not dressing issues. I have tried quite a few different athletic hair bands. During my workout they either:
A) stretch out and slip off my head creating the “sweaty hair in the face” issue I spoke about earlier
B) are too big and slide and shift which causes me to stop my workout to readjust it, henceforth (yep I just wrote that) I get irritated because I had to stop my workout
C) are too small and end up pulling and breaking off my hair and leads to a crabby me and a bad hair day.
None of these options are acceptable.
That’s where MaxFlowSports comes in to save the day! A few weeks ago I was contacted by Steve Hines, CEO of MaxFlowSports. He sent me 2 of his Cross-Grip Hair bands to try out and threw in a pair of low profile socks (not retail yet but available if you contact Steve at info@maxflowsports.com).
I threw my hair up in a pony, put on the houndstooth pattern hair band, put on my fresh new socks, went for a wicked 8 mile interval run and finished up the “test” with a bouncy plyo leg workout. Not only did my hair stay out of my face the entire workout, but it never slipped once. SCORE! And, DOUBLE SCORE, the socks stayed in place to and kept my feet seriously cushioned.
I wanted to know why MaxFlowSport hairbands stayed in place when others didn’t, so I checked out their website. They use a patent pending CROSS-GRIP technology. When most non-slip headbands have a grip strip or 2 on the inside of the hairband, MaxFlowSports has 2 grip strips that criss-cross to help it stay in place! Genius!
I am in love with my new MaxFlowSports gear. Please take the time to check out their website, facebook, instagram, twitter or pinterest to get the latest on their products and while you’re there buy something too! I AM IN!!!
Have you ever planned on getting in a great workout, but you have to skip the gym because you just don’t have the time? We are all running late, in a hurry or have something else that we need to be doing but that doesn’t mean that you have to forgo your workout. You just have to make the most of the time you have.
Time Your Rest Periods
In between sets or circuits, rest for ONLY the time it takes to catch your breath and feel ready for the next round and not a second more. Playing around on your phone, chatting with your workout buddy and flipping through a magazine will only distract you. Keep your rest breaks short and stay on task. You will be surprised how much time you save.
Interval Training
Unless you are training for a marathon or another endurance sport, there is no reason why you be doing long cardio sessions at a moderate intensity. Kick your cardio up a notch and decrease your workout sessions with interval training. By alternating high intensity bouts of exercise with moderate “recovery” periods, you can burn a ton of calories in a short amount of time. One great example is tabata training. Do a high intensity exercise like jump squats as fast as you can with proper form for 20 seconds then rest for 10 seconds. Repeat this for a total of 4 minutes. According to one study, “It would take five times the amount of typical cardio exercise, like a 20-minute brisk walk, to shed the same number of calories that result from a 4-minute Tabata.”
Strength Training and Cardio in One
Why split your cardio and strength training up when you can get them both done at once? Doing exercises that use multiple muscle groups as once in a circuit style with little to no rest between exercises, will raise your heart rate and challenge your muscles. Exercises like pushups, squat presses, lunges with bicep curls will have you breaking a sweat, toning your muscles and out of the gym in no time.
This article was recently featured on Health Your Way Online. I am thankful and honored to write for them!
You don’t need a gym full of weights and machines to get a great full body workout. Using resistance bands can challenge your muscles in a whole new way. And the best thing about resistance bands is that you can do a workout with them anywhere. Here are 3 exercises that will are guaranteed to give you results.
Squat Press
Stand in the middle of the band with feet parallel and shoulder-width apart. Hold handles at shoulder height, with palms facing forward and elbows bent. Squat like you are about to sit on a chair, keeping knees behind your toes. Stand back up to the starting position and then press your arms directly over your head. Return hands back to shoulder height and repeat sequence. Repeat for 10-15 reps.
Reverse Lunge with Bicep Curl
Place the center of the band under the arch of your right foot and hold both handles with the palms facing forward. Lunge backwards with your left foot and perform a bicep curl. Return to start position and repeat for 10-15 reps. Switch legs and repeat.
Crunch with Lat Pulldown
Loop the band around a stable object, like a railing. Lie on your back, gripping the band’s handles with arms extended over head. Raise your legs and bend your knees so your shins are parallel to the floor. Crunch your upper body forward while drawing your arms toward your knees. Keep the elbows locked and straight during this movement and maintain a relaxed and neutral position in the neck – do not bring the chin to the chest. Roll back to starting position. Repeat 20 times.

Every day is a new day, a new week and a new chance to start working towards your goals. So, what are goals exactly? Goals are something that are within your reach that you WANT. It may take WORK to reach them, but the WANT will carry you to them. Sometimes we get stuck in the “work” part of the goal. It’s too hard, it’s too far away, it will take too long..blah, blah, blah and we forget about why we wanted to reach the goal in the first place. The fire that burned inside of us, the excitement, the JOY. Your goal is obviously something that you want and is going to be awesome when you reach it, so why not enjoy the journey until you get there? You are working towards something positive, so if you stay positive and focus on how great the changes are, you will keep moving forward. If you get stuck in the negative or keep looking for the negative, you will have an awful time. You may struggle or have bad days, but look at those as lessons learned. You found a way that doesn’t keep you on track, so don’t go down that path again. See, negative into a positive. You are the one who is on this journey – you control how you experience it. You can make the most of it or you can make the worst of it.
“TODAY is my TOMORROW. It’s up to me to shape it, to take control and seize every opportunity. The power is in the choices I make each day. I will eat well. I will live well. I will shape me.”
